Evidence-Based Doesn't Have to Mean Hard to Understand
Therapy can use research-supported approaches without sounding like a textbook.
At Wayfinder, my three primary approaches are Triple P – Positive Parenting Program, the Unified Protocol, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I explain the ideas in everyday language and adapt them to the person or family in front of me.
CBT — Understand the Pattern
CBT helps us understand how thoughts, feelings, and actions influence one another.
We notice patterns that keep showing up, decide whether they are helping, and practice different ways of thinking or responding.
Unified Protocol — Learn to Handle the Emotion
The Unified Protocol helps us understand emotions instead of automatically fighting, avoiding, or being controlled by them.
We notice what happens in the mind and body, recognize avoidance patterns, practice tolerating discomfort, and learn that difficult emotions can be present without making every decision for us.
Triple P — Support the Family
Triple P gives parents practical strategies for strengthening relationships, encouraging helpful behavior, setting expectations, creating boundaries, building independence, and managing difficult situations.
The strategies are adapted to the individual child and family rather than applied as a universal parenting formula.
How they Fit together
CBT: What pattern is happening?
Unified Protocol: What happens when this emotion shows up, and how can I respond differently?
Triple P: How can the parent and family environment support connection, boundaries, and useful change?
A simple Wayfinder summary is:
Understand what's happening. Learn what to do with it. Practice a different way forward.
The Relationship Still Matters
A therapy model is a tool. It does not replace the relationship between therapist and client.
Before techniques, I want to understand what matters to you, what you have tried, what you want to change, and how you experience the world. Then we decide which tools are useful.
